I was scrolling through Reddit one day when I stumbled upon a thread titled “Indian Creepy Men.” My curiosity piqued, I decided to do some digging and found an article by The Washington Post. An Indian man in Australia was accused of stalking two Australian women — one for 18 months in 2012, and another for four months in 2013 — by repeatedly calling, texting, and approaching them. He even called himself their “boyfriend.” In court, Baliga pleaded guilty and said the male leads in Bollywood movies always got the women to say yes by doggedly chasing them. His lawyer, Greg Barns, said in court that this was “quite normal behavior” for Indian men. And do you know what’s the best part? The court dismissed the case. Can you imagine?
Before we dive in, I want to make it clear that this article is not meant to stereotype or demonize all Indian men. The vast majority of Indian men are not creepy or disrespectful. In fact, I have many Indian friends myself, and I love India.
In addition to stalking, these creepy men also post disturbing comments on women’s posts. Just take a look at these screenshots from Reddit. A woman shared her experience after posting four wedding dresses that she had tried on to get some opinions. What she got instead was a barrage of lewd and unsolicited comments from thirsty men.
Hundreds of similar comments can be found across social media platforms, from YouTube to Instagram to Facebook. These creepy men don’t just post disturbing comments, they also paste their numbers in the comments, assuming that the woman will be eager to call them after witnessing their appalling behavior.
Check out this one, too. This guy wrote a whole bio about himself, and the most impressive thing he could come up with is that he’s clean-shaven. According to a 2023 study published in Frontiers in Psychology, 60% of women are attracted to men with beards. I guess this guy is out of luck.
Why do they do this?
So, why are some Indian men so creepy? Why do they post creepy and disturbing comments on women’s posts? I’ve done some research on this disgusting behavior, and here are some of the reasons I’ve found:
1)Bollywood obsession
Bollywood, the world’s largest film industry, is a major contributor to the problem of creepy Indian men. Bollywood movies are notorious for their unrealistic and often harmful portrayals of love and relationships. These movies often show men stalking and harassing women until they eventually fall in love with them. This sends a dangerous message to young men that stalking and harassment are acceptable ways to pursue women.
Bollywood music is also a major culprit. Nearly 80% of Bollywood songs are about love, and many of them glorify stalking and harassment. This reinforces the message that stalking and harassment are normal and even romantic behaviors.
As young people watch and listen to Bollywood movies and music, they internalize these harmful messages. They start to believe that stalking and harassment are acceptable ways to get a woman’s attention. This can lead to real-world consequences, such as the creepy and disturbing comments that women often receive on social media.
2)Anonymity
Social media anonymity emboldens creepy men to post disturbing comments. When their account is anonymous, they think they can get away with anything. They hide behind their fake profiles, they lurk, believing they’re untouchable. But God’s eyes are everywhere, and He sees all.
3)Lack of education
India has a high rate of illiteracy, and many men do not have access to education about treating the opposite sex. People who lack education may also lack an understanding of women’s rights. This can lead to them believing that men have a right to control women’s bodies and behavior. This can make them more likely to engage in sexual harassment.
4)Normalization of sexual harassment
Sexual harassment is often normalized in Indian society. This means that it is seen as a common and acceptable occurrence. This can make it more difficult for people to speak out against sexual harassment or to challenge it.
Personal note
I am personally saddened and disgusted by the problem of Indian men posting creepy and disturbing comments on women’s posts on social media. These creepy Indian men are so proud of being Indian, they think their nationality gives them a free pass to harass women online. It is important to remember that all women, regardless of their race, ethnicity, or nationality, have the right to be safe and respected. I hope that India solves this problem soon and can become a women-friendly country.
